We are running for the community award

The Open Source Wettbewerb addresses public administrations at the federal, state and municipal level and awards digitalization projects that build on open source. Green Ecolution is taking part this year; the application was submitted by the Digitalagentur Smarte Grenzregion GmbH. Alongside the jury categories there is the community award, decided by the public, and that is exactly the one we are running for.

What we submitted

The core of the application fits in one line: sensors instead of gut feeling. Green Ecolution shows which urban trees and green spaces really need water, and automatically creates irrigation plans and optimized routes from current sensor data. The solution is open source, developed from practice and open to every municipality. If you follow this blog, you already know part of that practice up close. The test sensors are already in the ground across Flensburg.

The application lists all the partners behind the project: the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences, the Technisches Betriebszentrum Flensburg, PROGEEK, the Smarte Grenzregion and the City of Flensburg.

Vote until 30 September

The community vote runs from 17 August to 30 September 2026. During that period you can cast your vote directly on the competition’s website at open-source-wettbewerb.de/voting/green-ecolution. The awards will be presented in mid-October at the Smart Country Convention.

Every vote helps to give the project and the topic of data-driven irrigation more visibility.
