Under the motto “Think openly – act openly – connect openly”, the Smart City Amt Süderbrarup hosted the Smart Region Day on 4 February 2026. From 2:00 to 5:30 pm the day explored how open source, open learning formats and open cooperation advance digitalization in rural areas, with contributions from politics, business and municipalities, project presentations and room for networking. The program was a good fit for Green Ecolution. The platform is open source and grows out of close collaboration with the City of Flensburg.

What we showed

We took part with a project presentation and told the Green Ecolution story from start to finish. It began with the hardware: soil moisture sensors that transmit their readings energy-efficiently over LoRaWAN. On top of that came the application, which derives the irrigation demand per site from those readings.

The closing part was the operations planning, the piece of the platform that is meant to turn readings into concrete work: irrigation, tree care, maintenance and route planning in one system, with optimized routes for less effort in daily operations.

Connecting openly, taken literally

The rest of the afternoon belonged to the exchange with municipalities, companies and initiatives that want to shape the digital transformation of rural areas. That is exactly the environment Green Ecolution is meant to work in, which made Süderbrarup the right place for us to present the project. Thanks to the Smart City Amt Süderbrarup for the invitation and the organization.
